| ARTIST STATEMENT... |
| |
| |
As an artist, I am inspired by the way things look in the world around me and on my canvas. I want my artwork to first engage the eye and then the mind. Drawing is an essential element of my work. It is my hope that if a painting is visually interesting it will lead the viewer to further contemplation.
My oil paintings are grounded in the tradition of realism but with a current investigation into surface and pictorial space. The compositions I chose invite viewers to consider metaphorical and psychological interpretations for ordinary objects. Frequently, my subjects serve as symbolic containers occupied by our thoughts and feelings. My artwork is informed by experiences of emotion and vision as well as art history, critical theory, and contemporary painting practice. Description and visual poetry are my intentions.
